Becoming a better writer (Humanities)

This question is mainly for my humanities folks here. I sometimes feel ashamed of my writing skills. I always thought I was a good writer until I started the program and got consistent comments about grammar rules I wasn’t aware of, clarity, vocabulary, etc. I suppose it’s improved a little over the years, but when I catch a glimpse of others’ writing, I feel so devolved. I’ve definitely seen worse, especially in social sciences departments, but I’d like to work to improve my writing this summer.

To be clear, I have no issues with the actual content. Just style. I always scored really high on standardized assessments, so I think the problem lies mainly in that final polishing step.

For those of you who consider yourselves really good writers, what are some steps you took toward developing those skills? Any books, classes, exercises, etc.?

Suggestions for keeping cats out of the apartment for the day?

Apartment just gave a very short notice about a mini-fumigating in a couple of days. Were asked to vacate basically for the day, but not overnight. I’m trying to figure out the least stressful situation as possible for my two cats. I could take them to the vet for boarding, but I think that would be pretty stressful for them, and I’m nervous about hygiene and picking up something from other animals. I could have us just hang out in the car with the AC going, this would honestly be challenging for me though in terms of bathroom and internet (happens to be finals week and literally the busiest week of my life!) but probably easier for them. A hotel room for the night would cost at least $200. I can’t really think of anyone reliable I know to take them in for the day. Any other ideas?
