Wait listed for surgery. When and how to talk to clients about time off?

I’m a therapist in private practice. There’s not a lot of crisis in my caseload, with a couple of exceptions, but I am doing a lot of attachment work, and so there’s tenderness. I’m trying to move thoughtfully.

I’ll be getting a hysterectomy sometime within the next year, possibly as soon as this summer. Once I get the call, I could have as little as a couple of weeks before surgery. I plan to take 4 weeks off but may need extra time, depending on how things go. I have a colleague in mind for backup support, which I anticipate at least one of my clients needing.

When and how would/have you talked about medical procedures with clients, particularly when timing is up in the air?
