14y/o mechanics advice
My son has played baseball casually (house league) for 8 years. I’ve coached him the entire time. Baseball is his “do for fun” sport for 2 months out of the year. He’s literally never shown interest in pitching and actively lobbied against it…Until this season…Now he asks me to pitch every game. He did a nice job the first game, but he really lacks proper mechanics. I pitched some on my HS team (emphasis on some) 30 years ago…but I’m so out of my element when it comes to teaching a nearly grown, 6 foot freshman in HS. Here’s what I see….
He throws all arm…his lower body is basically not in use here…
He’s not pushing off with his back foot at all.
His release point is too high.
He’s not driving his body down off the mound and is too upright.
I’m sure I’m missing a ton….Now the question is where do I start? He REALLY wants to get better and maybe try out for the HS JV team next year, but I really am clueless as to what drills I can have him start doing to get better….
