Went to Simraungadh Without a Plan, Ended Up Learning About a Forgotten Kingdom

So yeah, this was actually a random visit to Simraungadh this morning. I had no idea about its history until I got there and learned that it was once the capital of the medieval Tirhut Kingdom.

At its height, it was one of the most powerful states between the Gangetic plains and the Himalayas. The kingdom was founded around 1097 CE by Nanyadeva, who came from the Karnata region of southern India and established the Karnata dynasty in the north. He chose the flat, forested Terai as his domain, building a capital that grew into a formidable city protected by multiple rings of walls and moats. Some medieval accounts even describe seven layers of fortifications.

Simraungadh wasn't just a military stronghold. It became a center of Maithili literature, Sanskrit scholarship, and Shaivite culture. The poet Vidyapati, whose devotional songs are still sung across Nepal and Bihar today, is associated with this court. The kingdom also controlled important trade routes linking the Gangetic plains with the hill kingdoms to the north.

One place that stood out during my visit was Ranivas Temple, also known as Ram Janaki Temple, located within a large 600-bigha site. The temple was lively with local worshippers, and I learned that the site is associated with Maharaja Siva Singh of the Oinwar dynasty and his daughter, Isri Devi. Inside were idols of Ram, Sita, and Laxman, along with statues of Jung Bahadur Rana, his wife, and his son Gen. Jagat Jung shown kneeling in reverence before them. The present Ram Janaki Temple was built in 1878 AD by Jagat Jung Rana and is said to commemorate the place where Jung Bahadur Rana died, fulfilling a wish of his queen before she committed Sati.

In 1326 CE, the Delhi Sultanate's general Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq invaded the region. The city was sacked and burned, and the last phase of Karnat rule often associated with Harisingh Dev, the dynasty’s final major ruler came to an end......

Modern development is putting Simraungadh’s ruins at risk. Statues and relics are frequently reported stolen or neglected, and authorities have even recovered looted idols and uncovered damaged ancient statues abandoned after excavation work. Preservation still remains weak.

And yeah Simraungadh carries huge tourism potential. Historical sites like the Ranibas Temple, Kankali Temple, and Jharokhar pond attract visitors, but proper preservation could transform them into a major heritage destination.

Pretty fascinating place to stumble upon during an unplanned trip.
