Help/advice with prepaid phone plans as a 17 y/o

Hello all

I am a 17 y/o trying to get off my parent phone plan for personal reasons. I live with them but have some funds from grad a couple weeks and ago and am moving in about 60 - 70 days. My birthday is in about a month. I just bought a new prepaid phone with a 70$ prepaid Verizon card. I am using smart switch to tranfer my data over, but I don't know if that means I will be on my parents plan on this new phone. I have to give them my old one.

Because I used smart switch, am I still on their phone plan? I didn't change my sim card because my new phone came with a prepaid sim already installed.

I'm super lost with this whole thing and know basically nothing about it. Any help is appreciated. Once i turn 18 I plan on signing a plan with Mint mobile for about $30 a month. I also have enough money right now to purchase a month of two worth of cards. I start a summer for for about 6 weeks and I'll earn 3500 dollars from that, and I'll also be able to get a job in college to pay for my own plan.

My main goal is that I have a phone independent from my parents so they can't claim a right to search it or take it from me.

How do I get my own phone and phone plan

I am 17 and am looking to get my own phone and phone plan. I just graduated high school and have about two months before I go to college but due to a situation with my parents, I need to get my own phone and phone plan before then. I have a phone but they've said if I get my own plan they'd wipe all the data off it. I've looked into it and I don't think they can do that even remotely. I've also looked and because I don't turn 18 until next month, I can pretty much only get a prepaid phone.

Am I able to go to Walmart and purchase a prepaid phone phone and just put my sim card into it? Will that work?

Sorry if this makes no sense, I just need help navigating this and don't know who else to ask.
