Bus etiquette/safety question

I have a question about bus etiquette/behaviour. Yesterday I was on a packed bus, and I was right by the back door. We pulled up to a major stop and most people on the bus needed to get off. I couldn’t step out of the way without blocking people, so I stepped off the bus and stood to the side to let everyone off, before stepping back on the bus. When I did, the bus driver started yelling at me, saying I should never enter the bus from the back door. I explained the situation, and he kept yelling at me that it was a safety issue. I asked what I’m supposed to do in that situation since I was blocking everyone, and he said I should have stepped farther into the bus (ignoring that the bus was packed and I literally couldn’t). I was a bit shaken up after, it was a bit aggressive. A few other passengers checked in on me after.

Now I’m confused. I’ve been taking busses my entire life and was always taught the polite thing to do is to step off and let people off. I see people do it all the time. What are you supposed to do in this situation?

Full solidarity with bus drivers, their working conditions sound outrageous, and it’s totally fine if this guy was just having a bad day. I just want to understand what to do in this situation since it will definitely happen again.

Thoughts?
