My 12 year old cat will not use the litter box.
I don’t know if this matters but my cat is female and spayed. I’ve had her for 8 years and up until about a year ago, she never had any accidents. About 4 months ago or so I took her to the vet because she was using the bathroom outside of the litter box fairly regularly. Her lab work came back clean and the vet suggested I get another litter box so I did. This seemed to work for about a month until she decided to no longer use the second box (a covered one). She would use first box, but still pooped on the floor occasionally. Within the past 2 weeks I’ve noticed her having more and more accidents. Tonight my SO found poop on our bed and I found a towel that fell from the bed onto the floor soaked with urine. I just don’t know what to do or how to help her. I keep the boxes clean and have used the same exact litter for years. I decided to take the lid off the second box tonight to see if that helps.
I did some research tonight on why she might be doing this and the only thing is I think she could find getting into the litter box painful? But that also doesn’t make sense to me as she still jumps on the bed and furniture with ease. I read where it might beneficial to try a pellet litter instead of the clay litter I’ve been using. I plan on going to the store tomorrow so any recommendations are welcome.
