Picking up the bass after 40 years
Classically trained in high school, I grew up with the founding member of Spyrogyra back in Smithtown, N.Y. and play a lot of jazz. I was invited into the band, but decided to finish college and go another way in my life. Did not see touring as fun.
So, at 23, I sold my upright, bought a P-bass and kind of/sorta played over the years, but nothing serious.
About 13 years ago, I got a call from a friend saying, "I hear you used to play the bass. My son played the bass, but he stopped and his is sitting in the basement. Why don't you take it for as long as you would like and have some fun". YEAH! Changed my life. I am now in a very large group of jammers and am the bassist for a Country/Bluegrass band for 12 of those years.
The point is, you can always get back to it, even though your hands are going to hurt for a year!
