Neighbour taking legal action
We purchased our second hand home October 2025, 3 bed and semi detached. We have as of 2 weeks ago began working in the garden. We took down the majority of a roughly 30 foot tree. We then received a call from our neighbour stating that the tree was on a shared boundary and there was an agreement with the previous owner to build around it. After checking the land registration and deeds we had no such agreement in place. The neighbour is now taking legal action saying that we damaged his raised bed( which was built after we took over and was not touched) and that we need to pay for the site clearing and reinstatement of his boundary line fence in full which would cost thousands. Do I have a case to fight back here or has anyone else been in a similar situation. Just to be clear we had no way of knowing the tree was a shared boundary as their fence was built around it and nothing was included in the deeds. Any help appreciated. Location: Ireland
