Update on Nitro 5 Black Screen stuck with blue light

Update on Nitro 5 Black Screen stuck with blue light

The Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-58) got stuck in a power-state hang after sleep + Windows updates, showing the classic 5-second blue LED then shutdown with zero POST. Standard EC/battery/RAM resets failed, but an extended CMOS battery disconnect brought back keyboard RGB and fans. Full recovery came when the SSD was moved to the secondary slot, followed by disabling the VMD controller in BIOS. That bypassed the glitched primary slot and Intel storage controller that had locked up. Laptop now boots normally, passes stress tests, and handles sleep/wake again. Solid reminder that on these models, slot swaps and VMD off often fix what looks like a dead board.

Acer Nitro 5 won't turn on after failing to wake from sleep - looking for help before repair

Laptop: Acer Nitro 5 (AN515 - 58 - 79X9)

Specs:

Intel i7-12650H

RTX 3070 Ti

16GB RAM (1x16GB)

1TB SSD

A few days ago Windows Update installed some updates and that's when the problems started.

After the updates, I started noticing some unusual behavior. The laptop would occasionally have issues related to booting and power states, but I was still able to use it normally. Over the next couple of days, I continued using the laptop without major issues.

I played Path of Exile 2 for multiple hours over 2 days:

No crashes

No BSODs

No overheating

No stuttering

No graphical issues

Normal CPU and GPU temperatures

Completely stable during gaming

Today I left the laptop in sleep mode and went for lunch.

When I came back:

The laptop would not wake up

Keyboard RGB was still on

Screen was completely black

System was unresponsive

Couldn't get any response from the laptop

I waited for a while but nothing changed, so I force shut it down by holding the power button.

Since that forced shutdown, the laptop will not boot at all.

Current behavior:

Press power button

Blue power LED turns on

LED stays on for around 5 seconds

Laptop shuts itself off

No Acer logo

No display output

No keyboard RGB during startup

No fan spin

No POST

No boot

Troubleshooting already done:

EC Reset:

Unplugged charger

Held power button for 60 seconds

Battery Reset:

Opened laptop

Disconnected internal battery

Held power button for 60 seconds

Waited several minutes

Tried booting on charger only

RAM Troubleshooting:

Removed RAM

Reseated RAM

Tried booting again

Tried booting with no RAM installed

Power Tests:

Battery connected

Battery disconnected

Charger only

Multiple power cycles

The result is always exactly the same:

Blue power LED for about 5 seconds

Then complete shutdown

What confuses me is that the laptop was completely stable while gaming for the last two days. The failure happened only after the laptop entered sleep mode and then refused to wake up.

Has anyone experienced something similar on an Acer Nitro 5?

Could this be:

BIOS corruption?

Embedded Controller (EC) issue?

Motherboard power rail issue?

Failed motherboard?

Something else I can still test at home before taking it to a repair center?

Any advice would be appreciated.
