Question about breastfeeding caries in 14month old.
My 14month old has had her bottom teeth since she was three months old, which are perfect. We rubbed her gums daily prior to her teeth erupting and have brushed her teeth diligently twice a day as her father has terrible teeth and I was worried about the possibility of her having the same. Her top four teeth which came in between 5-7months are all discoloured. For context, she has a suck swallow issue which is caused by laryngomalacia and additionally contributes to GERD which required hospitalisation and treatment due to the bad reflux. I was advised to breastfeed her for as long as possible due to her swallow issues (she's still not excellent at drinking from bottles and we have SALT support with this). But I'm now increasingly concerned about her teeth and the dental advice we have been given.
Her top teeth erupted with brown lines along the gum and general staining they're also a little jagged and almost chipped looking (see pictures). They genuinely came through with these slightly brown patches and lines. I've continued brushing twice daily, rinsing after feeds and wiping her gums after feeds at night. She's never had any artificial sugar or juice etc and won't for as long as possible. I've started using a tiny amount of flouride toothpaste against the dentist's advice as in my country, toothpaste is not recommended before one. Also dental visits are not routine until 2.
The dentist just confirmed that it is a mix of genetics and early caries caused by exclusively breastfeeding. She also stated that the reflux may have caused issues. Her teeth unfortunately look exactly like my husband's.
Her gums have started to bleed a little with brushing so I took her back to our dentist. She just said that there's nothing we can really do (to wean her is going against her other medical advice from her ENT/SALT team and would compromise fluid intake) and to just focus on hygiene for the existing teeth.
Her upper four teeth are getting progressively more staining however. Is this all I can do? Just a wait and see situation?
