Just picked up a G&L Legacy Special — a few questions (pickups, PTB system, neck care)
Just grabbed this G&L Legacy Special (see photo) and I have some questions I forgot to ask the shop.
1. Pickups — what exactly am I working with? I know G&L uses their own pickup designs rather than standard Fender-spec Alnico V's. Can someone tell me more about the specific pickups in the Legacy Special? How do they differ from standard Strat pickups tonally and spec-wise?
2. Tone controls — PTB system? The second tone knob cuts bass, so it seems like this is the PTB (Passive Treble & Bass) system. Can someone explain how both pots interact? I want to actually use them intentionally rather than just leaving them on 10.
3. Swapping to Alnico V pickups — does PTB survive the swap? I love everything about this guitar except it's not quite as "Strat-sounding" as I'd like. I want a more traditional Strat sound — would dropping in standard Alnico V single coils (Fender, Bare Knuckle, etc.) work with the existing PTB wiring, or does that wiring need to go too? Ideally I'd keep the PTB functional since the bass cut is actually useful — is that a straightforward rewire or does it get complicated?
4. Lacquered maple neck — cleaning/maintenance The neck has what looks like a gloss lacquer finish. I know lemon oil is a no-go on lacquered necks since it can't penetrate. Is a slightly damp cloth all I need, or is there a specific product worth using?
Also found this "Signed by The Cats" record at the same place — had to grab it.
