Fallout 4 + mods in 2026

When I started playing Fo4 via Crossover a couple of years ago, modding seemed only viable using complex (for me) pseudo-hacks detailed in posts like this: https://www.reddit.com/r/macgaming/s/3cmyCTxqKT

But after a vanilla playthrough and a pause I went back in for a Survival run and casually installed a mod (Survivalists’ Toolkit) from the Creations Club menu, and it works fine. I didn’t have to do complicated Mod Management installs. Maybe something’s changed in Crossover or fo4 in the last couple of years?

However, I’m looking at adding world-building / object / settlement mods like Homemaker and they often seem to require various dependencies like Settlement Menu Manager, Workshops Framework etc.

Can I get away with straight up installing from the in-game mod menu or am I going to have to install something in the Crossover bottle as the earlier modding guide suggests?

I hope the former, as the latter breaks my brain (and I don’t want to lose my save!) any help would be appreciated.
