Removing glued on book pages

The former occupants of the house we moved into decided to glue book pages onto the walls and ceiling. We'd seen this when looking, but had hoped they used an easier to removed adhesive. They did not.

I've tried perforating the glue with a paper tiger and then using a few different glue removal products, following the instructions on the bottles, but to no avail. Fortunately, they also did this to a door, so I can experiment with that for removing things before I'd have to full send it on the drywall.

Wise people of reddit, do you have any ideas as to how to get this off, or am I better of just trying to sand it then paint over it? I'm worried the pages would create enough of an uneven surface that it'd be noticeable after paint.
