Are today's YXS-280s better than 1900s super horns?

Are today's basic YXS-280s better than what professional "New Orleans Style" musicians had access to in the 1900s and 1910s?

Their biographies always say they were born in Bumfuck, AL, and could not even buy shoes. If the Selmers of the day were as expensive as real estate, how could they buy them? What was Lorenzo Tio, for example, playing?

Are saxophones more akin to violins (artisanship, quality of wood, matters) or cars and computers (after all, their technology was patented, and it seems industrial)?

Which players (and beginning when) had access to top-tier instruments? Was Sidney Bechet playing something incredible? Lester Young? Coleman Hawkins?

The definitive "The Pauper Cube"

I have two questions.

(1) Is there a way to easily access previous versions of "The Pauper Cube"?

(2) Is there a "The Pauper Cube" season that you think is superb?

I was thinking about building something made before "Fall 2020". I am not inherently against UB; but since I would prefer to have a fixed cube, it made sense to select a version that existed before the first Secret Lair launched.
