PC backstory feedback
I've played a few one-shots and short campaigns of this game, but all of my characters either have been pre-generated or had minimal backstories because that info was never going to be incorporated into the plot.
Now we're trying to put together a longer, more freeform campaign and the keeper wants to incorporate PC backstories a lot more. But I'm not really sure what makes a backstory good or usable for a Call of Cthulhu campaign.
This is what I have so far:
My character is a young dilettante, the second son of a wealthy British family. His brother died in WW1, but he avoided service by staying enrolled in university. Uninterested in being the new heir, he ran off to Paris to live a bohemian life free of expectations and responsibilities. That is, until his occult-obsessed fiancée went missing. His search for her is what draws him into the plot.
I feel like this background incorporates 3 aspects: difficult family relationships, grief/survivor's guilt over his brother's death, and duty to his fiancée to work against his low self-opinion and to give direction to his somewhat feckless personality.
Is this too much? Too little? I've never written a detailed backstory for this game before, so I'd appreciate any comments or criticism.
