Does anyone know how the hinge works?

I sometimes use my device to watch tv shows as I go to sleep.

How I do this though is by sitting the device on my bed side dresser and putting the screen upright 90degrees.

I feel like this might be loosening the hinge by weakening whatever spring loaded mechanism (my theory) is inside it.

Is that how it works?

Am I damaging it by doing this?
