Help me support Mile in My Shoes for a birthday wish!
Today is my 32nd birthday! And I’m choosing to celebrate by running Grandmas Marathon on June 21st in partnership with Mile in My Shoes.
Back in February I organized and hosted an ICE OUT Run and used this group to share that information. That run inspired me to continue fundraising and this spring I decided to raise money for a local non-profit, Mile in My Shoes. Mile in My Shoes is a Twin Cities non-profit that empowers people recovering from trauma, addiction and incarceration through running and community.
I’ve been running as a volunteer mentor with MiMS for 3 years now at the Salvation Army North Adult Rehabilitation Center. I’ve watched people join our program just wanting to lose some weight and leave with a half marathon medal. But what really sticks out to me are the conversations. One day a runner thanked me for just showing up, because so many times people and programs said they would show up but never did. Running with the members of Team Sally reminds me that we all struggle, that we all can do hard things, and that being seen and respected is the first step to building new friendships.
Ive been running and running races for a while now but this is my first ever fundraising run. I’m running with MiMS because after years of running MIMS has given me a running home, community, and a reminder that the biggest actions we can do for one another, is simply showing up. MiMS is a simple concept, pair up community members and program resident together and go for a jog and talk.
I’m racing to raise $750 before the race on June 21. So far we’ve raised $210 (I still have $50 in cash I need to deposit). MIMS and I would love if you could support us by sponsoring a mile for $2.62 or send me some goodluck for race day!
