Have you ever bought a tool before the habit existed?

This seems common in productivity and self-improvement.

You buy the app before the routine exists.
The notebook before the writing habit exists.
The course before the practice exists.
The calendar system before the weekly review exists.
The gear before the behavior exists.

The purchase feels like a starting point, but sometimes it becomes a substitute for starting.

I’m curious:

Have you ever bought a tool before the habit existed?

Did it help you start, or did it become another unused object?

What’s one thing you bought for your “future self” that became clutter?

I’m talking about the kind of purchase that felt responsible at the time.

The planner for the organized version of you.
The fitness gear for the consistent version of you.
The course for the focused version of you.
The kitchen tool for the meal-prep version of you.

Not random junk. More like hopeful purchases.

At the time, it feels like progress. Then months later, the object is still sitting there, unused, and now it feels like clutter.

What’s one thing you bought for your “future self” that never really became part of your actual life?
