I’ve been using Mac cleanup tools for years, and honestly… I got pretty frustrated.

Not because they don’t work — but because of everything around them:

  • constant upsells
  • “health scores” that don’t really mean anything
  • locking basic features behind subscriptions

All I really wanted was simple:
👉 see what’s on my Mac
👉 decide what to clean
👉 run actual maintenance tasks

So I ended up building my own tool: CleanMac Assistant

It started as a script, but I’ve now rebuilt it into a native macOS app.

What it does:

  • Cleanup (cache, logs, browser data)
  • Malware & privacy checks
  • Login items / LaunchAgents
  • App uninstall & reset
  • Duplicate & storage analysis (Space Lens)
  • Maintenance tools (DNS flush, memory, etc.)

The main difference:

Instead of blindly cleaning, the app can show you what it finds first.
You decide what gets removed.

No subscriptions
No “Mac health score”
No upsell layers

It’s also fully open-source, because tools like this should be transparent.

If anyone’s interested, you can check it out here:

Would love feedback — especially from people who’ve also been annoyed by existing Mac cleaner apps.

NOTE: For everyone asking or thinking this was all generated by AI, it’s partly true and partly false.

The Swift UI was partly created with AI’s help, but the underlying scripts weren’t. I chose this approach because I’m still learning Swift and don’t know it as well as I’d like. So please don’t hate me for that; we’re not all magic software wizards. I’m still learning Swift and having an AI to teach me with unlimited time and effort is a great tool.
