DIY upgrade questions

Pics are of Mr. Joshua and his current setup. I am proud of it compared to what we started with (20gal with paper towels lol) but he’s been in this tank like this for 3+ years now and I think it’s boring and he deserves better. I also hate how low it is and how shallow the substrate tray is, and am not a fan of the all glass tank. Its dimensions are 36”x18”x12” and the substrate tray is only 4” deep. I want him to have more space for climbing and for digging. And I’ve always wanted to make it bioactive, I’ve tried and failed twice. I’ve been watching a lot of serpa design and he made a tutorial a while back on diy plywood enclosures, so I want to try that.

Right now I’m thinking the internal dimensions should be 36”x18”x18” but I could go bigger, I’m thinking maximum 48”x24”x24” but I live in a pretty small apartment. Idk if the difference would be negligible either way. If anyone keeps their fella in a 120 gallon I’d be very interested to hear how or if your lizard uses the space. My guy seems pretty active sometimes and loves to climb everything even though he’s bad at it.

I’d also be interested to hear if anyone else has diy’d their fella’s enclosure and how you went about it, or if anyone has seen serpa design’s video and if you have any critiques or tips.

I’d love to hear about reptile safe materials for inside the tank, I want to make him a new humid hide and right now I’m thinking about blowing up a balloon, covering it in plaster, then letting it dry and popping the balloon, but I don’t know if plaster is even safe so if you guys have tips on construction materials that are safe that would be awesome.

Tips on clean up crew and plants would also be very appreciated. Thank you guys in advance! If I think of more questions I will leave them in the comments
