Bad grafting — an update
Many weeks ago, I gave a lighthearted and thoughtless attempt at grafting my new apple trees— the internet then informed me that I am an idiot. However I still promised to give an update, for science. Here it is:
Pic 1 shows what I was supposed to do (left) and what I actually did (right)
Pics 2-9 shows my failed grafts. I had a 100% fail rate with the new idiot method.
Pics 10-12 show the one graft that my husband did. To quote what he said at the time, “I don’t think you’re doing this right.” He had a 100% success rate with his end cleft technique. I probably shouldn’t have fully unwrapped this one, but again, science. I did wrap it back up with just saran wrap afterwards.
Overall, this may be an underpowered study but I do think that the new idiot method fails to demonstrate non-inferority.
I may have permanently damaged these trees, but I think I’m still going to give it another go in the fall with chip-budding!
Cheers!
