I LOVE IT when the narration switches pronouns for a character over the course of the story without explicitly mentioning the change in gender or labeling said character. It gets me, every. Single. Time. I can't seem to get enough of it.
I love the feeling when I notice a character I assumed to be a guy being referred to with she/her pronouns in the narration, so I start scrolling back and find that the switch happened several paragraphs ago, or half the chapter even. Somewhere along the journey she had that realization, and decided to maybe not think too hard about it and doesn't tell anyone.
It's the kind of development that makes me go, ohhh there's something going on here, and I would stand up from my ao3-reading shrimp position, pace several circles around my room in excitement, and go back to shrimp mode to keep on reading.
