Growing in southern Ontario in a community garden, in a moist spot, surrounded by wood chips and a parking lot and a building. Dug up this afternoon and left in the sun. In a full sun spot but getting shade from densely surrounded bolting kale, collar greens and radish plants.

Construction and Pest Help!

Okay guys, I need some help. I grow food in the community garden for the food bank. Last year, rabbits ate basically everything, and what they didn’t eat was chewed to the ground by voles. To change that, I did a big overhaul and transformed the short raised beds into 3 foot tall, solid, metal beds. They are filled with straw and compost. The corners are attached via an inner metal “L” shaped bracket and an outer metal “L” shaped bracket. Because of the side profile of the metal walls and the corner bracket, each gap contains a very small opening that I thought (hoped) wouldn’t be an issue. But the oles have moved in and are at full force eating every seed, transplant and seedling. I’ve seen them scurry into the gaps, and each morning there are new holes and tunnels just below the soil surface….

How do I seal these gaps? And how do I catch and move the critters? What material can fill gaps like spray foam insulation, but also be safe for a garden and impervious to voles? Is there something that can be burned/melted/welded into the corners to seal them? Doesn’t need to look pretty, just needs to work.

Who Are The Veggie Seedling Suppliers for Big Box Stores in Hamilton?

When I go to stores like Home Depot, Canadian Tire, Walmart, etc., they always have seedlings for sale in their garden centres. Flowers, fruits, veggies, herbs. Who is supplying all these veggies? When asking the staff that work at these places, they say the plants come in on rolling racks on big transport trucks, but can't name the company/organization that's actually doing the growing. The pots holding the small plants (especially annuals) don't have any labelling on them other than the name of the plant, growing specifications, a bar code and the text "Grown in Canada." But where in Canada? Who? The only supplier I've been able to find is Harvest Thyme (a division of Fernlea flowers in Delhi), and that is because they used to have compostable pots with a plastic label that read "Harvest Thyme."
