How realistic is it to do a full-time PhD and work part-time in the UK?
Hey everyone,
I’m about to start a PhD in Public Health (2026–2029). I’ve already published around 10 papers (first or second author), and I feel fairly confident about the research side since I designed the work packages myself in the proposal.
Back when I did my master’s in the UK, I managed to work part‑time at the uni and still graduated with distinction. It was tough, but doable. That said, I know a PhD is a whole different journey compared to a master’s, with more independence and probably heavier demands.
I’m wondering how realistic it is to combine a full‑time PhD with part‑time work in the UK. Has anyone here done it? How did you manage the workload and mental energy? I’d love to hear about your journey, the ups, the downs, and any advice you’d give someone about to step into this.
Thanks in advance, and wishing everyone else navigating their studies good luck, too.
