Piloted an AI coding assistant across four product areas for six months. The initial evaluation was positive. The tool performed well for the first four to six weeks.
The degradation started around month five. The index had fallen out of sync with actual development. New services had been added. Old services deprecated. Shared library APIs changed. The tool kept recommending patterns from deprecated services and suggesting integrations with APIs that had changed signatures.
Developers didn't stop using it because the generation quality was bad. They stopped using it because they couldn't trust that suggestions reflected the current state. Once that trust is gone it's very hard to rebuild.
A tool that indexes once and doesn't continuously update is giving developers a map that diverges from reality every single day. Did anyone else hit this and how did you address it?
