Independent contractor agreement says month-to-month but requires 14 days’ notice — when can I end it?
I’m an independent contractor, but I often feel like I’m treated more like an employee. Looking back at my contract, I realize I probably should have questioned it more before signing, but I was fresh out of college and eager to start working.
The contract itself is confusing because it uses both contractor and employment language. For example, the term section says:
“ This Agreement shall commence on [start date] and continue on a month-to-month basis, unless terminated by either party with fourteen (14) days’ written notice. Employment Type: At-will employment. ”
I’m trying to understand what the fourteen days’ written notice means in this context. Does it generally mean:
fourteen days from the date I give written notice,
fourteen days before the end of the month/monthly term,
or fourteen days tied to the contract start date?
The contract does not clearly say that termination has to align with the end of the month or the original start date, which is why I’m confused.
I know no one here can give official legal advice, but if anyone has experience with contractor agreements, employment agreements, or similar termination clauses, I’d appreciate any insight on how this is typically interpreted.
