How would you interpret this post-interview HR email?”

interviewed for an industrial/operator role recently and drove around 8 hours for the onsite interview, assessment, and plant tour. The interview itself honestly felt ok i fumbled very slightly and was a bit awkward.— I answered the technical question well, the interview was sort of short but they spent a long time showing me around afterward.

The next day HR emailed me thanking me for coming, said they’re “finalizing the interview process with other candidates,” and offered to reimburse my travel costs through They also said they’d be in touch once a decision is made:

EMAIL FOR REFERENCE: Thank you for coming to the plant yesterday. While we finalize the interview process with other candidates, I’d like to offer to cover some of your travel costs.I’ll be in touch once a decision has been made about the position.

finalizing candidates part is throwing me off i feel like if they wanted me they would have said something by now especially if they want someone to start june 1. i am also a bit desperate for this job so i cant tell if im just overthinking.

For context:

  • they already hired a couple people recently
  • they’re still looking to fill another opening soon
  • I do have relevant experience/certifications and an internal referral
  • they had me do a full onsite tour and meet the crew

Has anyone in industrial hiring seen similar wording before? Am I overanalyzing this?
