Opera GX can't play protected content (Netflix, Prime Video, Crunchyroll, Spotify) but Chrome works

Hi everyone,

I'm having a strange DRM/protected content issue with Opera GX on Windows 10 Pro 22H2.

The problem is that Netflix, Prime Video, Crunchyroll, and Spotify Web Player all fail to play protected content in Opera GX. However, all of them work perfectly in Google Chrome on the same PC.

Here's what I've checked so far:

  • Windows version: Windows 10 Pro 22H2 (not an N edition).
  • Opera GX is fully updated.
  • In opera://settings/content/protectedContent, both: are enabled.
    • "Sites can play protected content"
    • "Sites can use identifiers to play protected content"
  • In opera://components, Widevine Content Decryption Module is installed, shows version 4.10.3050.0, and reports Up-to-date.
  • I've already reset Opera GX settings.
  • I've reinstalled Opera GX.
  • I've restarted the browser multiple times.

The errors I'm getting are:

  • Netflix: Error code O7702-1003, telling me to enable protected content playback.
  • Spotify: "Playback of protected content is not enabled."
  • Prime Video and Crunchyroll also fail to play DRM-protected content.

Some people suggested:

  • Installing the Windows Media Feature Pack, but I don't have a Windows N edition.
  • Replacing libffmpeg.so, but that appears to be a Linux-only solution.
  • Checking H.264/AAC support, but since Chrome works correctly on the same machine, I doubt Windows codecs are the issue.

Since Chrome can play all DRM-protected content without any problems, this seems to be something specific to Opera GX.

Widevine components are present and up to date:

  • Google Widevine Windows CDM 1.0.2738.0
  • Widevine Content Decryption Module 4.10.3050.0

Chrome on the same Windows installation can play all DRM-protected content correctly.

The issue is not limited to Opera GX. Brave shows the same behavior. Chrome and Edge can play DRM-protected content normally, but Opera GX and Brave cannot. Spotify reports that protected content playback is not enabled, even though Widevine is installed and DRM settings are enabled.

Has anyone experienced this before or found a fix? Are there any Opera GX-specific DRM, Widevine, profile, or codec issues that could cause this behavior?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
