Help me decide between these two jobs
Hi there! This is my first post. I'll try to be brief!
I am 33 years old and have a ten month old. I have 9 years of experience as a pediatric outpatient SLP. I have been at my current position for 3 years, which we will refer to as Job A (details below). I am considering making the switch to the schools, which we will refer to as Job B. I'm located in a suburb of Charlotte, NC.
JOB A (pediatric outpatient, current position)
-considered full time, scheduled at 28 hours per week (9-4 Monday through Thursday, Fridays off)
-LOVE my coworkers. Very low stress job
-down the road from my son's daycare which is so wonderful, 10 min commute from my home
-paid per session (not paid for cancellations or no shows)
-super flexible, they don't care if you have to take a sick day or cancel patients
-owned by two therapists who are not really passionate about what they do, passive ownership with limited upwards mobility (have been there 3 years with no raise)
-paid at $42/hour. Most weeks I average 20 hours a week with cancellations
-my only benefits here are 14 days PTO and 401K matching (they do not offer health insurance)
-I average about $44,000 a year at this job
JOB B (school based)
-full time 37.5 hour work week (7 AM - 2:30 PM)
-in a rural school district 40 mins from my home, increased commute time
-lead SLP was wonderful and let me know there would be another SLP on site to mentor me as I'm nervous about making the switch
-I would stay at one elementary school, would not have to travel between locations
-lead SLP politely and professionally hinted that this is a very low key district with not a lot of high strung parents
-incredible benefits through the district including health insurance and all the works
-$70,000/year for a 190 day work year (summers off, 2 week Christmas break, week long fall and spring break)
Here's what's holding me up:
In order to make it to the school on time, I would have to leave my house at 6:15 AM and have my mom bring my son to daycare. My husband works shift work and leaves the house at 5 AM. The thought of not being there when he wakes up and not being down the road from him is hard for me to think about.
My only complaint about my current job is that I am struggling with the cancellations and non-guaranteed hours. We are essentially paying for full day daycare for me to sit at work and not get paid (some days I am there full time and only see 3 kids).
Do I risk the flexibility/ease of this private practice for a more stable paycheck? I'm torn and would love any input. Thank you if you've made it this far!
