It's been some time...
Hi Dad, its been some time
Since we've been eye to eye.
Years since I learned what dementia
And Alzheimer's would truly mean
Confusion and anger sullied my adolescence
Growing and maturing while you withdrew day by day
Eleven when the diagnosis came, alone,
Scared that one day I'll be just another face.
Whistling and dancing throughout the house
The TV on in the background
Was the tune right or the beat followed?
No, it never mattered, because the music moved you
Work around the house, never completely done.
Pinecones, pine needles, lint, crumbs
Small collections gathered and
Piled here and there.
The love you shared with Mom has never been lost.
We've banded together through it all.
Thick and thin,
Ups and downs.
The family that was started is following by my side,
We lead with love and compassion.
And while our children
May never hold your embrace
We can always tell them of their Grampa.
The community he built and served.
The memories that will live on in our hearts.
And the family around you now.
Your battle is over now.
We love you, Dad.
