Did anyone experience diplacusis and recover from it??
Starting in late April, I not only experienced partial hearing loss in my right ear, but also developed diplacusis. Many sounds are accompanied by a sharp metallic distortion, almost like the jingling of keys — very different from tinnitus. In addition, voices sound noticeably higher-pitched in my right ear compared to my left. I am officially diagnosed with Mild to Moderate hearing loss plus SSHL.
I completed an 18-day course of prednisone, but unfortunately neither my hearing nor the diplacusis improved. I am now undergoing intratympanic steroid injections, and after two injections (which, honestly, have been quite traumatic for me), I still haven’t noticed any changes. The symptoms have not worsened, but they have not improved either.
My ENT and audiologist have recommended hearing aids like “get them now!” and I understand that I may need them eventually. However, neither has been able to answer the question that concerns me most: what is likely to happen to the sound distortion and diplacusis? Could hearing aids potentially reduce these symptoms, have no effect on them, or even make them more noticeable?
Unfortunately both of them dodged the question by saying “I think it will get better/your brain will adjust.”
So here I am - if anyone can share your journey and give me some tips, I’ll really appreciate it! I am in my early 40 and no head trauma/ear infection history nor family history of hearing loss. It just happened that I lost the genetic lottery.
