Cat urinating outside box: what worked for me
I’ve seen a lot of posts on here about (male) cats peeing (not spraying) out side the box. My 7yr old cat never had issues until I started to remodel my home. Didn’t make the connection that maybe stress was the issue. Well, It was… and my stress about where the next pee spot to clean up was probably not helping.
Most importantly… I took him to the vet and ruled out UTI or bladder crystals because that could be fatal. My vet suggested Prozac and it was a godsend (although I was afraid of the side effects, thankfully there were none). In the meantime while he adjusted to the meds here’s what I did:
Dr. Elsey’s Cat Attract Litter - it’s a little pricey but it helped him not associate the litter box with stress or pain as I’ve heard this works well for cats with UTIs, so I gave it a try.
Feliway- I thought it was gimmicky, but it seems to help? I continued to buy the Amazon knock off and it’s cheaper and works just as good. One in each if his two hangout spot rooms (I also have 3 cats)
Completely stopping my renovations while he adjusted to the meds. This was so important.
Because he was diagnosed with FIC, reducing the stress really helped.
Hemp/L-lysine lick-able treats (how I sneak in his meds)
3 weeks later and I feel like I have a totally different cat stress wise. His lovable behavior didn’t change at all.
For anyone on the fence about meds, it’s worth a try. Be patient and make the environment comfortable during adjustment process. Too many people are ready to give up and there’s hope. 💕
