Early Speech Therapy
Hey all, I have a 5 year old daughter that stutters(I stutter myself as well)
A couple years ago, I reached out to a pretty reputable speech therapist from a stuttering organization about what I should do. I didn’t get speech therapy as a kid and want to do what I can and is best for her. To my surprise, they recommended that I do not pursue traditional speech therapy and instead to be supportive. Supportive as in encouraging her to finish her sentence when she gets frustrated and reassuring her that she just talks differently than others, but that’s ok. I get the premise of how sometimes traditional speech therapy can reenforce the idea that there is something you are doing wrong and need to fix, but I just don’t want to do her a disservice..
As you all know, fluency seems to fluctuate and today, she seemed to have an especially hard time. I noticed her excitement shift to the discouraged look I know too well as she was having a hard time trying to explain something that happened while I was away at work and it just got me rethinking it all. Maybe I should go for a second opinion? If so, any suggestions?
