Amputation vs leg repair surgery for my cat, Oreo after a dog attack, looking for honest advice
My cat Oreo was attacked by an unleashed dog and suffered fractures to his front right radius and ulna. The orthopedic repair surgery would be very expensive, and I’m trying to figure out what is best for him long-term.
I’m not looking for reassurance, I genuinely want honest opinions from people who have experience with tripod cats.
If your cat had a severely broken front leg, would you choose:
- Surgical repair with plates/pins to save the leg
- Amputation
My biggest concerns are:
• Pain and quality of life long-term
• Recovery time
• Mobility after healing
• Risk of complications
• Whether saving the leg is worth it if the outcome isn’t guaranteed
Oreo is currently eating, drinking, and taking his pain medication. I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through something similar. For more information my GoFundMe link: https://gofund.me/11b8e8eca
UPDATE: Oreo update 🐾
Thank you so much to everyone who has donated, shared Oreo’s story, and kept him in your prayers. Your support has meant so much during this difficult time.
Oreo is continuing to recover after being attacked by an unleashed dog. We are currently seeking another veterinary opinion to determine the best course of treatment for his injured leg and whether it may be possible to save it with casting/splinting.
He is still receiving veterinary care and follow-up evaluations, and we are taking things one step at a time. I will continue to keep everyone updated on his progress.
Thank you again for helping Oreo and giving him a chance to heal.
