Just a bit of rant I have about RE8 (Spoilers for some parts of the game)
Now, I absolutely love RE8, it’s a very fun experience from start to end, and I really enjoy it for what it is. However, ever since my 4th play-through on the hardcore difficulty, I thought about something, that’s kind of stuck with me: The Game’s relation to family. Every main character, from protagonist Ethan Winters to the antagonists, all have something to do surrounding family, and it made me think about something in particular.
A bit of a hot take, but I feel Ethan’s character would’ve been better if he wasn’t trying to be yet another quippy badass. I get that it’s more fun to play, but I feel like Ethan should’ve been a bit more sympathetic or caring throughout the whole game, still having a few quips and one liners. Like, maybe he and Dimitrescu could have a few interactions about their children, how angry they are that their children were taken from them, or how important their children are to their, maybe they could relate and even respect each other because of the hardships they went through, and how they just want to do their own things but are forced into fighting each other.
Adding onto the whole ‘Ethan should’ve been a bit nicer‘ thing, Moreau. Throughout the entire reservoir section with Moreau, the poor guy is constantly talking about how he‘s seen as a hideous disgrace to the family, and how all he wants is to be treated like an actual child to Mother Miranda. All he wants to impress Mother Miranda, the only mother figure he has in his life, and his mother figure is someone who couldn’t care any less for him if she tried. Throughout Moreau’s section, I feel like Ethan should’ve at least shown some sympathy to Moreau, try to help Moreau understand that Miranda doesn’t care for him, but fails due to Moreau being too deep in Mother Miranda’s manipulation and indoctrination that he fails to realise that she doesn’t care about him until it’s too late. In general, I feel like the game is incredibly mean spirited to Moreau, like, it goes way too fucking far, man. Moreau is such a sweetheart who doesn’t deserve what happens to him and how he’s treated by everyone.
In conclusion, I feel like the game should’ve added a bit connections with the whole family relationship about all of the villains, maybe have Ethan talk with the villains more often, get to know them personally, could’ve made for some very interesting moments. I get that it’s probably a stupid thing to want, but I don’t know, it seems like it would fit to me, what do you think?
