Shimano Altus rear derailleur mounting/assembly.

I have a new Mongoose Envoy that had horrible shifting and a loose and janky looking rear derailleur. I adjust and tweaked until I got fed up and just pulled the derailleur off to see if it was broken in some way. I disassembled the mounting screw and everything seems fine. And like a fool, I didn't take pictures before hand.

When trying to put it back on, I noticed that way it goes back together the adjustment screw is opposite if where it I think it should be. The holes in the plate where the spring ends slot into puts the put screw pointing to the back of the bike.

What I was wondering is if it's possible that this bike came with the wrong derailleur from the factory, and that's why it shifted badly. I have another bike with an Altus as well, and the screw looks like it's in a better orientation (although I ain't taking that one apart).

Did these derailleurs come with different mounting plates/orientations? Does anyone happen to have this bike and can take a picture of how the derailleur is set up?
