Open and affirming Black or ethically diverse churches Philly/DMV
Hi! I am seeking recommendations for Christian congregations that are predominantly Black or racially and ethnically diverse in the Philly metro area (open to Wilmington) or the DMV (DC or MD preferred). My partner and I really want to find a church community to get involved in as our full selves! Though sparing, I’ve seen Christian’s post on here so I’d be glad if anyone in these areas would recommend a church.
Currently, I attend a non-denominational church in Philly with a predominantly Black congregation. It has lively worship, engaged prayer, and practical teaching; however, their written beliefs state that marriage is between a man and a woman and biological sex should be upheld. We're kind of alternative-looking (face piercings and tattoos, my partner more so), but never once have we received a side-eye or a mean gesture. Everyone is really kind. This is the most comfortable I’ve ever felt in a church, even though I’ve attended open and affirming churches in the Philly area. That said, I would love to get involved in an affirming church nearby! I am originally from MD, so I’m open to the DMV area too, just for awareness since I visit every so often
