Thinking of leaving my job after less than a year for a significantly higher paying role...how bad does this look?
Looking for some honest advice. I'm F21 and have been working in my field for 3+ years..I started young and have moved through a few roles progressively. I'm currently 8 months into a role I genuinely enjoy at a well known company and I've been offered a position at another org that's a notable step up both in title and salary (we're talking ~20k jump in pay).
The new role is exactly where I want my career to go and the opportunity came up unexpectedly...I wasn't actively looking, but have now made it through 3 rounds of interviews and this opportunity is looking very likely.
My concern is how leaving after 8 months looks for me. I didn't leave my previous role quickly - I was there for over two years - so this would be the shortest stint on my CV. A few things I'm weighing up:
- The salary jump is significant and the role is a genuine step up in responsibility
- There's no obvious progression path in my current team - the next step up doesn't really exist and I'd essentially need to create it myself
- My current employer has been decent to me and I feel guilt leaving so soon
- I'm 21 so I'm not sure how much 8 months matters at this stage, but I also don't want to develop a reputation for jumping around
Also, I think the thing I'm struggling with the most is that both orgs are genuinely great & it's not like I'm trying to escape a terrible situation. My current employer is very well known and a respected name in the industry so I do worry that by leaving I'd be giving up something good/leaving opportunity on the table.
I am driving myself insane thinking about this and would super duper appreciate other perspectives....has anyone else left a role so soon and how did it turn out? And how do you handle the guilt when both options are so great??? Am I leaving a great opportunity on the table / stick it out here and see where it goes ???
