1971 Johnson 50ESL71S
I have a 1971 Johnson 50ESL71S and the manual for the exact motor. I got the boat for a great price because the previous owner said he broke the key off, tried replacing the ignition switch, and then could not get it to crank afterward.
I rewired everything according to the factory wiring diagram. At some point, someone installed what I assume is an electronic shift control box since this motor shifts electronically. I have never seen a setup like this before. From what I can tell, the box runs to a separate control with a two way switch and a push button.
Right now I cannot get the motor to crank. I already replaced the solenoid and confirmed the starter itself works.
My assumption is the motor will not crank because the system does not recognize that it is in neutral. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
