Loose grand leg joint
I'm brainstorming repairs to a blind joint, drilling into the unfinished segment where the mounting plate is fitted to the leg...
Is there an advantage to inserting a single (1/2") hardwood dowel through the center of the joint, or inserting 3 to 4 smaller (1/4") hardwood dowels around the tenon? I'm hoping to achieve the strongest structural repair to a beefy, load-bearing leg.
Knowns: Glue starved blind joint, round tenon splayed with wedge, round mortise. The 2" tenon is turned from the leg, not a separate dowel. I'm using a long working time epoxy (West or G2) to fill gaps. Due to the soft lacquer finish I've ruled out separating the leg from the capital to replace the wedge.
TLDR: Seeking advice on single dowel vs multiple dowels to achieve durable repair to load bearing, loose joint.
