Does your company have a Special Builds Department?
For reference, I’m in a Midwest metro area of roughly 1 million pop.
As the title says, is there a separate department or a specific cabinetmaker assigned these tasks? I’m not sure if it’s just a regional thing. For the past four years I’ve been in special builds (as well as nearly everything else), with my current title being “Specialty Woodworker”. I’m the only one at my current, small shop with that title. My previous employer had three of us (shop of 30 plus cabinetmakers/laborers).
Special builds is tasked with the more decorative and technical builds. In my experience, such builds include mantels, floating shelves, range hoods, island walls and legs, Murphy doors, pocket doors, built in tables, any type of “seed to flower” builds. I also may make moulding, perform complicated cuts and stuff like bar rails and valances.
Does your shop bother making this distinction? Or does such work just fall on the most senior cabinetmaker/owner?
