I'm German and Merle (pronounced Mare-leh) is a pretty normal female name here. I recently discovered that Merle Haggard is male. As I only ever heard the name without knowing any music by him, I just asumed he was a woman based on the name Merle. Is it a normal male name in english speaking countries or is it like The boy named Sue?
