Ex put my name on a debt consolidation loan without my permission
My ex and I broke up in 2021. Back then, he co-signed student loans for me. Ever since, I have been the only person to pay on these loans.
Today, I receive an email from him saying that he was applying for debt consolidation and that the only way he would get approved was to add my student loans onto it, that it would not be a “freebie” and that I would need to pay him back. He said in order to complete the application that I would need to give him the last 4 of my social. Obviously, this made me feel very weird. First, I felt like he was telling me rather than asking me. Second, I’ve been paying on these loans, not him. I said that I needed to talk to him before any of this got pushed through.
My best friend thought this was weird too and suggested I call the debt consolidation people. Well, I did.
Turns out, my loans did NOT need to be part of this and, according to the agent, my ex made it seem like he had been paying my loans and that he was going to take on all my debt. Wrong. Additionally, the agent told me that I was a co-applicant. I never agreed to any of this. In fact, we have not spoken in over 4 years, probably more. It sounds like he signed my name on this. Lastly, he was going to do this and let it impact my score without telling me. His application was approved on the 19th, and I did not hear anything about it until today.
Do I have any recourse here? I am going to remove my loans from this, but can he come after me legally for doing so? Is there anything I can do for him filing a false application on my behalf?
