Patagonia Itinerary Sanity Check
Hi,
Planning a Patagonia trip in November and would love a sanity check on the itinerary.
The rough plan is:
- Arrive in Santiago but fly directly to Puerto Montt and spend ~3 days in the Lake District area (eg. puerto varas, isla de chiloe, etc. we would rent a car)
- Fly to Puerto Natales
- Bus to El Calafate/ El Chaltén (9 days, of which 2 "travel days")
- Bus back to Puerto Natales
- Start the O Trek the next day and complete in 8 days / 7 nights (already booked)
- Possibly take an evening bus to Punta Arenas after finishing
- Spend 2 day trips to Tierra del Fuego (eg. isla magdelena, porvenir, visit king penguin colony)
- Fly back to Santiago
- One full day in Santiago before flying home
A few questions:
- Is 7 full days in El Chaltén too much, about right, or not enough?
- Is the lake district worth visiting? (note have spend time already in chilean patagonia before, done base torres hike already)
For context, I'm a backpacker and my priorities are hiking, nature, wildlife, and scenery rather than cities or nightlife.
Additionally, for the O Trek, what's the recommended clothing setup for November?
Currently I have:
- Hiking pants
- Thermal base layers
- Waterproof rain pants
- Haglöfs hardshell rain jacket
- Patagonia Nano Puff lightweight jacket
- Patagonia fleece(s)
Thanks ahead for the constructive and valuable feedback.
