Feeling guilty about moving with my rescue dog

My partner and I adopted a 7-year-old spayed mixed-breed rescue dog last year. She had a difficult background - multiple homes, likely abandonment, and signs that she may have been abused in the past. Despite this, she adapted surprisingly quickly to apartment life and bonded with us very fast.

At first she was shy outside but mostly quiet. Over time she became more reactive to certain triggers: vehicles, delivery people, noises in the hallway, people passing the window, and eventually other dogs too. The strange thing is that she was initially very social and friendly with dogs, even playful in off-leash areas.

A few months after adopting her, I temporarily moved to another city with her because of university. Since then, her anxiety/reactivity seems worse overall. Some days she does really well, other days almost every walk is stressful. She also started occasionally peeing in her sleep indoors, despite previously being fully house-trained. Medical tests (bloodwork + urine) came back normal.

More recently, she’s also become reactive toward train staff while traveling, and after long train rides she sometimes gets vomiting/diarrhea episodes the same day.

I can’t stop wondering if this is mostly stress/anxiety-related and whether the move destabilized her, or if I somehow caused this by making the wrong decisions. She’s my first dog and I honestly feel overwhelmed and guilty sometimes.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Did things improve? What helped your dog feel safer or less reactive? Would you focus more on behavioral training, stress reduction, medication, routine, avoiding triggers, etc.?

Any advice or experiences would really help. <3
