AIO: My dad sings the American national anthem almost every night, but we’re not American.
This sounds stupid in writing but here goes. My brother (23M) and I (21F) have been hearing our father (66M) aggressively singing along to the star spangled banner for the past 3 nights in a row. We don’t live in America. None of us ever have except for my brother. He doesn’t sing it peacefully or like he usually sings along to songs though and that’s what worries me. It’s like a scream-whisper kind of a singing. His voice is grating and harsh, nothing like how he sings along to regular songs or even our countries national anthem. My brother thinks it’s funny but for some reason it’s been bothering me.
We have a computer room in our house that our dad uses mostly in the evenings after dinner, and it’s right over mine and my brother’s rooms. You can hear it the best from my brothers room, and he’s just singing it over and over and over and over again. Same raspy scream singing every time.
It’s not just singing either. I’ve heard him cursing and aggressively affirming himself against “changing his mind” because “he doesn’t want to”. I don’t really know how to describe it but sometimes he sounds like he’s degrading someone. He’s always got headphones on so I’m not sure what he’s looking at or watching on the computer, but I know he’s on Facebook a lot.
He’s pretty right-leaning (as is most of my immediate family) and has some opinions I do not agree with but this seems different somehow.
I need you to understand that I love my dad, but this scares me for some reason. I truly hope I am overreacting but I really don’t know. I wrote this in a ramble after hearing his last scream-whisper karaoke and I’m a bit elevated (🍃) ifykwim, so I might just be paranoid and need reassurance.
If you have questions, please comment and I’ll try my best to get back to you. Any advice helps. :)
