Sketchy or Typical behavior?

This topic has likely been beat to death but I experienced something that’s bothered me ever since. I was looking for an investment property some years ago. An agent I knew well was the listing agent of a house I was interested in. I decided to use them as my buyers agent as well. They said there were 2 offers coming soon on the property so I should definitely offer over list. Offered 30k over. I bought the house and after closing I asked where the other offers came in at. They said “oh we had a verbal offer but no others”. This agent obviously pressured me to offer more than list when I could have clearly offer at or below list. Is this an ethical violation or just common practice? Seems sketchy as hell.
