First ghost hunting experience was disappointing

I grew up watching just about every show related to ghosts. It was something that was always interesting to me. However, the older I got the more skeptical I got. I went a few times on a hunt with friends in college, but it was more about being liqoured up than actual hunting. My wife has gotten deeper into it as we have gotten older and she’s the one who is more active on that front while I’ve let it go.

For our anniversary, I planned an outing to atchison because of the lore of it being haunted. I thought it would be a good bonding experience, and maybe rekindle that interest from my youth. However, I quickly lost interest. We went to the Sallie House and had an initial interest. But after a few mins I felt silly and got bored and spent the rest of the time playing on my phone. Wife said she had some feelings of heavy and dread, and thought she heard a few things but I got nothin. The closest I got was when she came out of a closet/room off of a bedroom and we were talking about it and the door came slightly ajar. For a second I believed something was up but then remembered it’s an old house and there was no lock/handle so it’s more likely the door just naturally creaked from a draft or gravity.

We went to the McInteer villa and while the property was cool…..it was also extremely cringy. There was more Halloween decor mixed in with period/original items. There was a dead bell? It randomly went off and was told it was paranormal, but it’s hard to believe that it was anything more than a party trick as it didn’t go off if you were around or looking at it. I ended up again finding a seat and playing on my phone while the wife walked around and invesitigaged, but of course it was equipment provided by the home owner.

I left really disappointed, maybe it was due to my own skepticism holding me back but also the lack of concrete evidence that forced me to set it aside was frustrating. Is this normal, or maybe I set myself up for failure by going during the day/picking touristy stops?

Planning on taking the wife to atchison for our anniversary as she is a big Ghost enthusiast, as well as witchy/crystal enthusiast. I’ve done some research and have seen you can visit a few one off buildings that are haunted, and a few tours. We’ve done a few tours that were more, “stand in front of the place and we tell a few stories and move on” and I think she would prefer going in and experiencing some things. Any tours that people recommend that are more interactive? I see you can visit a few if you visit them individually, but since we live in kc and are only there for an afternoon/evening, it would be better to find something you could have more volume of experiences if that makes sense.
