didnt realize how important documenting landlord stuff was until this week

after what happened with my landlord randomly unlocking my apartment while i was home, ive been way more paranoid about keeping records of everything now.

before this i honestly never saved texts/emails or wrote anything down because i figured "if something happens ill remember it." but after posting here and reading peoples replies, i realized thats probably a bad idea.

a couple people suggested keeping a paper trail for literally everything, especially if a landlord brushes stuff off or tries to make you feel unreasonable for being uncomfortable.

i ended up organizing all my screenshots/messages and trying one of the tenant documentation tools people mentioned in the comments because my notes app was a complete mess. mostly just wanted one place to keep timelines/photos/messages together in case anything weird happens again.

im not even expecting some huge legal battle or anything lol, but it honestly made me feel a lot less stressed knowing everything is saved properly now instead of scattered everywhere.

curious what other tenants here do though. do you guys keep records of every interaction with landlords or only once problems start happening?

my landlord unlocked my apartment while i was in the shower and acted like it was no big deal

earlier today i was literally in the shower when i suddenly heard my apartment door unlock and open. im not gonna lie my heart dropped because i thought someone was breaking in or i forgot to lock the door or something.

i got out and it ended up being my landlord. he said he just needed to “check something quickly” in the apartment.

the thing thats bothering me is i never got any notice beforehand. no text, no email, no knock, nothing. i was home the whole time too.

later i told him it made me really uncomfortable and he kinda brushed it off like i was overreacting and said he was only inside for a minute. but honestly i dont care if it was 30 seconds or 30 minutes… randomly unlocking someones apartment while theyre home feels weird to me.

now im sitting here wondering if this is actually normal landlord behavior and ive just never dealt with it before, or if this is as inappropriate as it feels.

would this bother you guys too or am i making it into a bigger deal than it is?
